RMT On The Offensive Over Public Service Cuts
In 2010 you’d be hard pressed to find many Trade Union leaders calling for all out action against the state. Infact it’s hard enough to find one branch of a union not at odds with other branches in nearby towns.
So it is refreshing to see that there is still some kind of militancy brewing from the old left in the form of Bob Crow’s RMT who will be lobying the TUC’s congress with demands of mass mobilisations on the streets in scenes reminiscent of the poll tax struggle.
Not only marches though but
” coordinated strike action across the public and private sectors to stop their savage assault on jobs, living standards and public services.”source
Hats off to you Bob, the fact of the matter is however if we’re going to go down this route it’s unlikely that there are going to be many union leaders willing to go the whole hog and say ‘stuff the anti-trade union laws’ and return to ‘illegal’ trade union actions.
We hope to be proved wrong, because this course of action is now the only way we are going to get out of this mess.
It was great to be at the recent Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival, the bedrock and home of trade unionism. Sadly many of those who attended the event in no way shape or form have the willingness, guts or moral fortitude to carry on the fight first started by Hammett, Brine and co.
We shall see over the coming months…
