"I have long argued that the giving of offence, and even hate speech, should be a moral matter but not a matter for the criminal law. That is as true on the football pitch as on the streets. We should always challenge racism. We should also always challenge attacks on liberties in the guise of faux antiracism." Kenan Malik

Opinion: The Students Were Magnificent Today…

Now That Is Something We Have All Been Wanting To Say For A Very Long Time.

George Deacon

Already in the time it has taken me to escape from the ‘Kettle’ of the Metropolitan Police outside parliament and travel back to Norwich, the political establishment, ably assisted by the loyal press and TV networks, have quickly moved into action condemning the student led protest.

Of course the truth is somewhat less prosaic but more substantive for all that. Today the British student movement came of age, confirming what was apparent to anyone who is actively involved in fighting the cuts.

This is a new era and we are at the start of a period of radicalisation not seen in generations. A pyrrhic victory achieved in the order papers of the Commons today will be paid for with a heavy defeat tomorrow.

The students were magnificent today. Now that is something we have all been wanting to say for a very long time.
